I am not in agreement with the Catholic Church about abortion, but then, I am not a Catholic. As a Jew, I consider Jewish teachings about such matters. However, I would be very surprised in a Jewish institution had a graduation speaker who is an outspoken Holocaust denier!
Many people other than Catholics look to the Catholic Church for moral integrity. This is the second time in a few short months that some of us have been sorely disappointed in the way the institution does not defend it's own values.
The church should stand by its teachings with a firm resolve, and since Notre Dame is a church affiliated college, it should have a graduation speaker whose teachings Catholics respect and who, in turn, respects Catholic teachings. A graduation is not the place to have a celebrity (which is how Obama is treating the Presidency). The speaker is there to impart wisdom, strength and experience to the graduates.
If I were a Catholic graduate at Notre Dame this year, I think I would ask the university to mail me my diploma and I would find some other way to celebrate on graduation day.
The university adminstration should stand for their principles. That is the best way they can point to a life of goodness and integrity for their students.
Funny, I just watched 'Rudy' two nights ago.
The Pres Obama and his stance on abortion is unfortunate. It would be better than to leave the status quo than to make steps towards looser laws in favor of it. The Republicans should have done more while in power.
